They say a soul is the immaterial essence, the animating principle, the actuating cause of an individual life.
But what if you had to share yours with the one person you hated the most?
The soul mate principle states that for every one soul there is another that will recognize its match, hence creating the perfect union.
But what if you had two soul mates, which would you choose?
What if your choices had eternal ramification?
Deceived, the debut novel in the Soul Keeper Series, is a modern day love story about the implications of having more than one soul mate, and having to choose between the two of them. The decisions of the gods has left the next generation, their heirs, torn between fate and reality, and the balance of the future hangs in anticipation of what’s to come.
*~Excerpt~*
Sam ran her hand over the cover of the book, and an icy chill raced through her body. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to rub away the goose bumps to no avail. Opening the book, she began flipping the pages, scanning the old Greek drawings. She stopped on one of Prometheus tied to a rock with a crow picking at his torso, his face twisted in agony.
"What a way to go." Sam grimaced at the picture. She looked over at the clock on her night stand and stretched again.
Almost eleven o'clock, good grief I’m going to be tired tomorrow. Sam closed the book and went downstairs to make herself a cup of instant coffee, hoping for a little more energy. The basketball game definitely took it out of me.
Sam sat back down at her desk and opened the book again. She turned to an inscription entitled "Soul Keeper Prophecy." It was handwritten by the author, she guessed, on the back of the index page. Sam read to herself the words that were written so small, yet precisely.
"Stupid Greek prophecy, can't understand anything it says,” she muttered. “Not that I expected to. Sounds creepy anyway."
A whisper skittered across the back of Sam’s neck. "Read it out loud, child." She jerked up and cursed as she slammed her knees against the bottom of the desk.
"What the hell?" She looked around the room, kneeling down and checking under the bed.
Must be hearing things. Or maybe the gods are playing interference again.
Sam snickered at the thought. She sat back down.
Maybe reading it out loud and a little slower might actually help me decipher its meaning. She exhaled loudly and began.
“In a battle of wills,
of the gods of old.
For each his revenge,
will he forfeit his soul.
On the chess board of blood,
will their narrative play.
aged, innocent lives,
revenge claims her way.
Out of hate will come love,
and love will come hate.
For immortal and man,
have entwined their damned fate.
As the time draws near,
a soul mate will speak,
And invoke its commencement,
when strong will fall weak,
And the child in the middle,
will break the seal
That is held by the fate,
who's heart cannot heal.
With death sets in motion,
a prophecy of old
Ergo seeker of heart,
and keeper of soul.
"One heart with two parts,
split between twins,
two bodies that hold,
one despondent young man.
As the battle ensues,
against himself he will stand,
her pendulum swings,
with balance in hand.
For this generation,
will affect us all,
for the same man will rise,
but he also will fall."
Sam stopped at the end of the prophecy, the room much cooler. She shivered and got up to get a blanket, but when she stood, her legs threatened to give out from beneath her.
What’s wrong with me? Sam thought, wrapping her arms around herself tighter, trying to shake the feeling that someone was in the room with her. Stop it. You're starting to creep me out.
I'm creeping you out? You’re creeping me out.
She sighed and walked over to her bed, sitting down. Sam leaned over and put her head between her hands and took long, deep breaths, trying to get the feeling of looming death out of her system.
"It has begun," the voice whispered again, and Sam jumped up with a yelp of fear, only to have her breath catch in her chest. Unable to breathe, blackness closed in and violently pulled her under.
